In Guatemala, poor farmers often have fields on the sides of mountains. Incomes are so low and other conditions so bad that many go to the United States, breaking the law, to find better jobs. "I've told people what happened to me, and they think I'm making it up." Vincente Sanail Lopez, who has warned everyone in his hometown about the consequences they could face for illegally working in the United States. His warnings apparently missed their mark. Iowa was a gamble that hundreds of Guatemalans lost. But life at home is so bleak, more will go, despite the risk.
